Information and Logistics of START

START is the Sexual Trauma-Informed Advocacy Resource Team, formerly known as the Student Title IX Assistance Resource Team on campus. START is a confidential peer-led resource for students. Students can sign up to have a private meeting with START for the following topics:

  1.  Discussing and receiving support on experiences with any form of sexual violence, harassment, stalking, relationship violence, or any form of gender-based violence.

  2. Answering questions on navigating the Title IX process at CC and the different options available.

  3. Providing information on consent and healthy relationships.

START also hosts on campus events on topics such as healthy relationships, violence prevention, supporting survivors, active bystander training, and much more. Two notable events START participates in is Take Back the Night and TedSex. For more information, please look at our events page.

Training and Disclosures

All START members are required to take a 40 hour advocate training through the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CCASA). START members are trained on Title IX, providing resources and support to survivors of sexual violence, and conducting meetings with students. Furthermore, START members have emergency mental health training and this year will take workshops on supporting queer and trans survivors.

START has an application due to the nature of being a confidential resource and all START members are interviewed extensively (and conduct checked) prior to being let on the team. This process ensures that students applying are aware of their constraints in maintaining confidentiality and all members of START are required to sign a confidentiality agreement to be on the team.

Breaking Confidentiality

START is committed to maintaining confidentiality from events, identities, and any information disclosed in private meetings. START is not directly affiliated with any part of the college but receives sponsorship from the Wellness Resource Center, which is a required task to be recognized as a club and receive funding from CCSGA. START recognizes that its separation from any school bureaucracy is a key factor in why students choose to conduct meetings with us. This is a core principle of our organization, to provide students with a resource away from school bureaucracy.

However, there are three situations in which START is required to disclose information to Cassie Luna, the Assistant Director of the Wellness Resource Center. They are as follows:

  1. If you threaten to harm yourself or suggest any suicidal behavior or ideation.

  2. If you threaten to harm others or imply intent to harm others.

  3. If you are currently in an escalating situation of violence where a serious threat to bodily injury or death is possible (e.g your partner is strangling you).

By scheduling a meeting with START, you acknowledge that we are required to disclose to Cassie Luna if any of these three circumstances arise and START is not liable for this breach. Otherwise, your confidentiality is protected in all other circumstances.

Record Keeping

Due to the possibility of breaking confidentiality in the three situations listed above, START is required to keep records. No records kept will have names of students on them but instead assigned code names that only the two co-chairs know. All records are stored in a locked storage cabinet that no one has access to except the two co-chairs. This ensures your information is protected unless the conditions in the above section are met.
